Wanting to learn

I am pretty technologically proficient, but have little training. Could anyone point me to the resources needed to develop banners? I love level design and texturing stuff so i don't think it will be a big leap to learn to make banners. Haven't put any time into it b4 i get started i thought i would ask for some suggestions or pointers as there are alot of really cool ones around here. Also my new computer finally has the resources to really get into some more high quality and demanding software applications. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated and I am a quick study. Hope to hear from some of you experts soon.
