If you have windowsXP you can do this:
Start > Run > msconfig
And then check what services (and startup items) are running. If you don't know what the item is, go to
http://www.google.com and search for it to see if its normal or not. If it is spyware, remove it. If you're unsure ... leave it.
Aside from that, you can do the same type of thing with spybot.
You can also use the trial version of adaware (or purchase the full version) as it is quite effective.
You may also wish to tighten the security on your computer (increase Windows firewall security level, turn your antivirus on 'paranoid', etc) until you fix all the problems.
