[color=#00BFFF]This does seem a bit obvious, but I have *A LOT* of formal hands on experience with hardware and software - as well as a lot of formal education on the same - and the #1 cause of outages is "operator error" (ie. the guy using the equipment not knowing wtf they're doing). So I think it is more than fair for this to at least be mentioned.[/color]

OEM driver is the driver that originally came with the product.

Right click the Sound icon next to the clock, click playback devices. Right click on the speakers and click Configure Speakers. Set the speakers to Stereo (or whatever is the correct setting for your soundcard) and click Next, follow the setup through to the end.

Obviously...

Right click the Sound icon next to the clock, click playback devices. Right click on the speakers and click Configure Speakers. Set the speakers to Stereo (or whatever is the correct setting for your soundcard) and click Next, follow the setup through to the end.

This should reassign the speaker jacks as appropriate for your chosen configuration.


What's probably happened is Windows is trying to create a 5.1 setup on a device which does not have enough output jacks to support that, and therefore remapped the microphone input jack as a surround sound output jack.

The mic goes in the Red/Pink one.
Primary/Front Speakers (or headset) goes in the green one.

If your sound card is built into your motherboard, then you need to install your motherboard drivers right after you're done reinstalling the operating system. It will include audio drivers (or you can download them if you're able to get on the internet).

As far as configurations go: once you have all drivers properly installed, you can go to: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices, then click on the 'Audio' tab and make sure your 'Sound Playback' is your OUTPUT, and your 'Sound Recording' is your INPUT. Click on the Volume button for 'Sound Recording', if you want, to geek out some more specific settings (such as making sure 'Microphone' is checked and not line in or anything like that.

Hmm my laptop has a speaker port that is designed to be a mic port as well, so maybe its supposed to do both, but its not on the right 'mode'?

Kind of hard to diagnose when we dont have the program in front of us to look at all the settings...
