The mic goes in the Red/Pink one.
Primary/Front Speakers (or headset) goes in the green one.

and, um, when you format your computer, it removes everything, it doesnt install drivers. Those need to be manually put back on.

You could also just try and plug in a mic, and see if it detects it? (just a thought)

Right click the Sound icon next to the clock, click playback devices. Right click on the speakers and click Configure Speakers. Set the speakers to Stereo (or whatever is the correct setting for your soundcard) and click Next, follow the setup through to the end.
Nope, doesn't do that sort of stuff.

he needs the OEM Drivers, and unfourtanatley he stuffed his disc up / lost it
