both were screwed 1 was frezzing the com and the other wasnt loading ~_~

Re: RAM

Its likely one of the two sticks has failed... unfortunately it's more likely with second hand RAM as you don't know how much use (and possibly abuse) it has already had before you get it.

com seams 2 runing fine atm with the old ram in...

for a little while the com wouldnt boot at all just sat there......

taking the ram back 2 see anyway(was second hand ram)

Re: RAM

well if the ram is bad i dont think the computer can run. Could the contacts be drity and causing the contact from the motherboard and ram be unstable causing windows to think there is a probably therefor giving you blue screen (also not booting because it thinks no RAM is present) otherwise the RAM may have been fried somehow

Re: RAM

is it possible for ram to crash yr com????and stop it from working??even booting up?

got 2 1bg ram sticks to day working fine then out of the blue i get the blue screen something about dumping somthing......
wouldnt boot up so i put back my old ram in and it worked ok...so i tryed new ram 2 see...wouldnt boot then would boot up then crashed with blue screen then repeated about 3 times boot blue screen boot blue screen...so i put back old ram in and seems 2 be working fine....

so can bad ram does this???

Ok, your current RAM is DDR2-667 with CL5, fairly standard mid range speeds for DDR2.

Rather than buying a single 2gb stick why not buy two 1gb sticks to make the most out of what your computer supports;

http://www.cex.co.uk/products/Computing ... y&mode=buy

Those are DDR2-800 sticks (the fastest official DDR2 speed) at £12 each, total price of £24 if you bought 2, just £4 more than a single stick that you can only use half of, at best. Being second hand they are unlikely to be a matched pair, but since you won't have a dual channel memory controller that doesn't really matter.

If you want to find out what speed they are you can use this tool;

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Don't worry about all the blurb about configuration and such, just scroll down to the list of versions and download the setup.exe for the most recent one. If you don't know what your looking for take a screenshot of it's main window once its running and post it here, I should be able to see from that what type of RAM you currently have installed.

i have 2 512mb cards in atm havnt a clue what make or speed they r

Re: RAM

Yeah, it's a PCIe x1 or x2 slot, not enough bandwidth for a graphics card (they usually use an x16 slot).

As for the RAM, how much do you have in your computer at the moment? If you already have 2x1gb then adding another 2gb stick that might or might not work as 1gb seems pointless. Also the DDr2-667 is not the fastest DDR2 you can buy (officially DDR2-800 is the fastest) so if any existing RAM is DDR2-800 adding the DDR2-667 will cause your existing faster RAM to run at a slower speed.

just seen that the pci-e slot i have is for a sound card not a graphics card lol

2 GB PC5300 , DDR2 667 240 Pin Memory
that make any since?

so if u used the 2 gb on its own it might just work as 1gb??

as far as i can see the speed supported is pc2-5300 mb/sec (message as pc2_4200)

that make any since?

the max allowed say 2 gb(2*1 gb)

that price of £20 is second hand price from the cex shop.....

also i see on my online specs it says
pci slot 2 available
pci express*1 one available
but i do not see a slot for a pcie card(think i ask before)its bloody annoying ~_~

If you put a 2gb stick of RAM into a motherboard which can only support 1gb sticks one of the following will happen;

a) Nothing, the memory controller will not recognise the RAM at all and will fail to boot.
b) The memory controller will address the maximum amount of RAM it is able to on a single stick of RAM and it will function as a 1gb stick, with the remaining 1gb wasted because the memory controller does not have a large enough address buffer to utilize it.

Your best option is 2x 1gb sticks. Get some decent sticks with high clock speed and low latency if your trying to boost performance as much as possible, the difference between DDR2-400 and DDR2-800 can be surprising. My only caveat on that is you should avoid DDR2-1066 *unless* your motherboard manual specifically states that it can support that unofficial DDR2 clock speed.

For instance two of these 1gb DDR2-800 CL5 sticks: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/120446

Unfortunately you picked a very bad time to upgrade your RAM, prices have more than doubled in the last few months... I bought 8gb (4x2gb) of Crucial Ballistix RAM for £75 about 4 months ago, the same RAM from the same website now costs over £170.

what happens to a com if u put more ram in than yr allowed???

max memory im allowed is 2*1gb 240 pin,ddr2 sdram
i can get my hands on a 2gb ram for £20
what would happen if i put 2 gb ram in instead of 2*1 gb? or 2gb and a 512mb ram?????
