Thanks guys, I've bought all the parts now. In the end I went for:
  • 2 x 8800GS using SLI (Cheaper + better than one 8800GT.)
  • 500GB SATA hard drive + my current 100GB hard drive.
  • 4GB RAM (onboard 2GB + two 1GB sticks, I'll probably upgrade this when I get the cash.)
  • A new 22" monitor.
  • Intel 6600 Core 2 Quad processor.
  • Gigabyte S-Series motherboard.
  • A new box (with flashiness =D)
Got all that for about £520. =D

For video cards, I'd say stick with the GeForce 8 series and 256mb of video RAM. If you have money to blow or want a top of the line vid card, go into the 9 series or even get SLI (multiple video cards).

For sound, it really doesn't matter to be completely honest. Sure, you can get better quality sound if you spend $300 on a dedicated sound card, but then you'd also have to spend another $300 on the sound system to go with it so that you can hear that high quality sound in high quality. I don't think it's worth it. Most onboard sound systems are pretty reliable these days.

The newer X-Fi sound cards are pretty awesome.

THE best video card on the market is the 9800 GX2. Under that is the 9600. Than the 8800Ultra. (9800=8800x2)

nvidia is good brand, I used to have issues on ati brand because of no support on opengl and bad drivers that caused graphic errors or bsod but now since amd owns it i dunno how they are like anymore

sound cards I'm not very sure, I'm using nvidia on board sound card but maybe sound blaster from creative?

I'll be getting a new computer for my birthday (with quad-core =D), but I wanted to get people's suggestions for the best video cards out there for gaming and the best one for me. Thanks.

EDIT: Also, should I worry about my sound card? If so, what would be a good choice?
