If you had to pick out of those two, I would go with the first one.

A slightly more expensive alternative, dunno how much you are willing to spend;

The latest from nVidia, it's performance is almost on par with an 8800GT, however it's brand new out so it's slightly over the RRP at the moment, wait a few months and it will probably be closer to the £100 mark.
You might also find
this review of the 9600GT useful, it compares the 9600GT with an 8600GTS, an 8800GT, an ATI 3850 and an ATI 3870. If you don't want to read the blurb just skip through the pages and check the graphs showing the benchmark results on various games.

Wait a minute, the machine is 6 years old? Is it AGP or PCIe, because that makes a massive difference to what graphics cards you can install in it. If it's AGP then none of those cards you have listed will work in it.

Just PCI? No AGP or PCIe (PCI Express)?
If that's the case then the only cards you can buy are really shitty PCI ones which would probably not give you any performance increase at all. I don't suppose you know the motherboard manufacturer and model number?

Simply put: You need a new computer.
The processor is ancient. You will be extremely dissapointed by the preformance of a new video card like the ones you were mentioning, because I guarantee that it will be bottlenecked by the CPU. You would need another one, and that probably involves a new motherboard/memory upgrade.
If its PCI only, and not AGP then you really dont have any choices for video cards, except maybe something from the Geforce 4 series from some.. old time parts collector.
Modern PC gaming is not usually cheap...
