To my fallen brothers and sisters in arms: Rest In Peace

You have my utmost respect and gratitude this Memorial Day for your sacrifices defending freedom around the world; both now and in the past.

Veterans Day and Memorial Day both have very special meaning to me. In the United States, Memorial Day is a very important holiday. It commemorates all of our fallen soldiers from previous wars and the sacrifices they made to protect our nation and to represent freedom in oppressed nations. It is a time to take pause and remember that freedom is not free. It is a time to put all political differences aside and to remember that every day soldiers, airmen, marines, and sailors around the world are making the ultimate sacrifice: giving their life .... so that we can live our lives in peace.

With all of the wars going on today and the brutal commentary of both foreign nations and internal critics, I think it is most appropriate to recognise these fallen heros who gave their blood for foreign nations without reservation. Who stormed the beaches of Normandy and liberated Europe. And it is a time to do some deep thinking about how it is that you are able to live your comfortable life without fear of execution, persecution, or censorship.

President Bush has declared a moment of silence for these heros at 3pm today. So whether you respect Bush or the United States or you don't, whether you're a U.S. citizen or not, I request that you dedicate a few minutes at 3pm your time to honor those who have brought freedom to you in the past. And I encourage non-Americans to take extra time to help their friends and family gain a true appreciation for the sacrifices our nation has made for yours in the past.

Rest in peace, comrades. You will NEVER be forgotten.

You mean like Remembrance day? You know, when everyone wears poppys? November the 11th IIRC. Same day that WW1 ended.


Anyway, RIP to all the Americans who gave their lives alongside their allies in wars past and present.

It doesn't mean anything any more, I never see anyone wearing poppies, there's no respect, Hell, my school didn't even bother to respect the minute of silence last year.

That doesn't mean you can't personally observe it. Where I live everyone observes the minute of silence, and quite a lot of people wear poppies.... and a lot of people turn out to the official events in London, or so it would seem from the television coverage.
