As the founder of a community who is named after a destructive force of nature, I would like to wish each of you happy Earth Day! (read more about Earth Day HERE)

Many people don't appreciate this day, but as our planet continues to die by our hand it becomes increasingly important for us to be mindful of our daily actions.

I would like everyone who reads this to set a personal goal of reading through the suggestions shared below on ways you can 'give back' to mother nature AND also sharing these ideas with at least one friend. If everyone does this, we as a community can help do our part.

As a personal goal, I plan on converting this site and our resources to be more "green". Being green is a relatively new movement dedicated to protecting the environment. You can read more about this HERE.

Please share your ideas on ways to clean up the environment. And if you see a piece of trash outside, take the time to pick it up - even if its just for today. Every person can make a difference!

This is serious mag. Happy Earth Day, Our school actually hosted a competition to see which homeroom could recycle the most things. Seeing as our mascot is a Shamrock, We hold Earth Day to be just as an important holiday as all the others.

Hahaha mag. We had time trials today in track, and one of my teammates skipped it with the excuse 'it's earth day'. Pretty good. I don't plan on doing anything different. Maybe drive less, but my school is ten miles away and Summer always brings lots of driving. It's called living in a city :D

I personally just don't care about being green. People I've known seem to do it more for image and a feeling of personal accomplishment rather than the benefit of the world.. To make themselves feel better as they drive away in their SUV to go order a large triple cheeseburger value meal with a diet coke.. There's rarely anyone that is fully committed to being truly green.. Plus stores use giant cardboard displays to advertise earthday.. Oxymoron right? .. what are they gonna do with it when earth day's over?? they dont keep the signs in the back till next year, they throw them in a bailer and ship them in the next truck out to be recycled.. Why not just not order the sign and keep from having to recycle it in the first place? The city pick up recycling system would work better if more people were involved, but the way things work now, a high powered deisil truck drives around a route, and about every third route there's s recycle bin with some stuff in it.. California has the right idea to get everyone to recycle cans and bottles at least.. Charge a tax when you buy a can or bottle called CRV (I believe it stands for California Return Value), and then refund cash when you drop off cans and bottles at a recycling center.

Just because There's some major flaws in the current "green" systems, that doesn't mean I cant give some simple reasonably cheap advice in the spirit of earth day, which i'm suprised anyone would celebrate.. Buy reusable Grocery bags at wal Mart.. They have $.50 blue bags, $1.00 Black bags with stronger material, and in the spirit of earthday they even came out with a new one, the foldable bag that comes with a little thingy(?) to put it in, and tie up to be more compact.. only $2.00 ea.

In San Francisco I believe they've actually outlawed plastic bags.. I don't know how serious it is if it's only limited to stores not allowed to hand them out or if you just get arrested for carrying one in the street.. I havn't researched it

Happy earthday.. lol

Just because 90% of the world treats the Earth poorly, doesn't mean the other 10% can't pick up for their slack. This day is about educating and motivation. Inspiring action. So rather than making a post about other people, I would have focused my writing on what YOU can do to help in their failture.

If everyone made a small change it can make a big difference. Turn off you monitor and speakers if your not using them. Open a window instead of cranking the air conditioning. Don't do donuts in the snow just because you didn't get snow all winter and all of a sudden have 14 inches on the ground in Spring (That ones been tough to keep going).
