I hate to break this to you, but you won't get 100Mbps connection over old copper lines.

First of all DLS is distance sensitive, so you'd have to live close to a Central Office in order to get decent noise margins (and higher rates). And second ... even if they extended it, it'd be the same principle: you'd need to live close to a repeater.

Here in the U.S. they're rewiring all homes to have fiber optic wiring instead of old copper. And they're still selling standard "8-20Mbps" connections. Saying you'll have 100Mbps lines is a bit exaggerated. You're probably confusing the standard LAN cap of 100Mbps with the ISPs throughput.

In either case: I'm all for people getting higher bandwidth. So if you do end up getting 100Mbps of private bandwidth to your house more power to ya!

I know this...
They are replacing the copper with fiber also some older houses will need re-wiring. Also opening new exchanges, our network is alot different from yours. The government (the new one that just came in) is also pumping money into the project which is rad. Im not saying its going to be quick but it will happen they are starting in 2008 at a rate of 15 exchanges per month. The ISP pioneering the technology in aus is Eftel: http://www.vdsl2.com.au/

If you're on 'copper' (cable modem) then its shared bandwidth. So that means everyone on your network segment shares 8MB. You don't get 8MB to yourself. It's a little trick they like to pull. But if you're on DSL, you should be getting close to your full speed unless you live far away from the Central Office (telephone company).

No one can ever hit their 'full' potential because of TCP overhead. You gotta subtract a little bit of bandwidth here and there. So if you had a full 8MB a speed test would probably show 7.5MB on your best day, anyway.

yeah, ecstasy you're getting your full 8mbps. The 300k or whatever that is missing is probably overhead.
