Access your Server and NR from ANYWHERE.

Post by PsuFan »

How is this possible?

Web Administration.

Soon you will be able to access your server from anywhere with an Internet connection. NR will be like your own Web Server. You will be able to access all of your server controls. Turn the server on or off, add moderators, add maps, change virtually everything.

What I would like to know is, What else would you use it for?

Hosting Server Online/Offline Images
Possibly hosting maps
Hosting other things like ranking information.
Possibly hosting your entire website, so it is connected to information about your server?

Anything you could tell me that you would want to use the Web Administration for to let administrators or server players access would be very helpful.

Thanks!

The only problem I forsee with this is if the website (and all your config/connection information) is entered/stored on a webserver that isn't trusted.

For example: if a customer purchases a server from AOhost and we setup NR for them and they run NR off of our box, they have direct access to their files and their files are directly secured by the person they pay to protect their data. If a person runs a server and hosts their remote admin through a website at a different location then a 3rd party is being entrusted with information; a 3rd party who is neither a NR developer nor an AOhost agent.

I'd like to talk to you about this a little more PsuFan before its fully deployed (even in beta). Nightma12 had been telling me about this for awhile now ... because I had been asking him for over a year to make it himself and he was too lazy to do it.

Anyway, contact me via PM (or xfire if you use that, fl00d3d is my xfire nick)

Well good news for you is there will be ZERO problems with the security issues you described. The web server will never be at a remote location. I am building a web server into NR. I will have access to nothing nor will I know the address its behind hosted from.

I'll still contact you MSN if that's an option?

Tiny problem: Web servers bind port 80, and if you have multiple NR's trying to bind the same port as the web services only 1 application at a time will be able to actually bind it. So either the web services will block NR from binding it, or a single NR will block all other NR's and the web services, either scenario is bad.

I got that problem covered also. :)

Since I designed it from scratch and made the whole webserver. I can tell it whatever port you want. It already can be changed. If it gets used enough I might make a main webserver that you can add IP and domain names to point to other NRs/webserver.

So the GSP would have to install a web service onto their game server, right?

No, not at all. The web server is completely independant, all you need is an open port. The only thing it uses is winsock which NR already uses so nothing else is needed. I coded it from scratch so the only think making it a webserver is my code, there is no IIS functions or web server .dll's. Any computer already running NR will have absolutly no problem running the web server.

I dont think it will. People shot it down in the designing stages because other programs like rdp & irc do the same things.

There is also web-based RDP, but we don't offer it. I know that doesn't help -- but just kinda backing PsuFan's decision to suspend the project. At least for now.
