internet freezes momentarily while downloading

Post by deathsta2 »

I have SBCYahooDSL with 516k dsl, running on 2wire - two days ago while surfing, my internet connection freezes...then, continues on. everything seem ok for a bit, then, it will either slow down to a crawl, or freeze again...then, 30seconds later it will continue on. i have 2 computers networked experiencing the same problem.

The browsers (I have two mozilla and explorer) and computers DO NOT freeze, only the dsl. The ethernet light blinks as if its active, then stops all the sudden, it doesn't go out just stops blinking, which causes a huge problem when downloading anything larger than 5 mb. Small files I can download fine - i tested my internet speed, reset modem (20 sec rule), checked for spy ware, malware, virus, and reset ip.... everything i can think of.

Also when playing renegade I can join a server, then when i leave, the server listing does not show, I have to restart renegade (annoying). Same with streaming videos - it loadings for 2 min. then stops.

Called my ISP, they have no idea and said everything on their end seems fine and can't send out a tech. It is obviously not fine... They ran a series of tests and said my connection was fine and the problem is probably on the computer. All this happen two days ago. it started when i was downloading some stuff on bitcomet overnight, the next morning I noticed problems.

I can use my friend's internet just fine, so it has to be something with the internet. Any ideas?

These guys seem to have the same problem, but the solution didn't help:

if you have a router try release and renew your ip as well you can unplug the power to your modem (and router) to reset it. If all else fails try a big f*cking hammer.

Well you started by insisting that it wasn't your computer and that is MUST be the DSL.

Then in the next paragraph you insist that it's not the DSL and its something with your computer.

So I don't know what to think.

Based on what you described to me, it does in-fact sound like its a DSL issue.

DSL is a very sensitive internet. Ask them to do a "line test" and to check "noise margins". If its new internet then this is probably very likely. If you've had it for awhile and this just started it could be either your NIC (network interface card) drivers or your DSL company having networking issues.

To be quiet honest it is hard to troubleshoot your issues without more information.

If you don't mind doing a legthy test for me, then do this:
  1. Find your latest NIC drivers and download them to your hard drive. Make sure you remember where you saved them.
  2. Uninstall your current NIC drivers.
  3. Turn OFF (not restart) your DSL modem
  4. Verify that anything in your house which is plugged into the phone line has a DSL filter on it (phone lines, fax machines, etc.) If they don't (and you don't have a filter for it) then just unplug it for now. No filters = extra noise on the line, and sometimes just enough to weaken your signal and cause these problems.
  5. Reboot computer
  6. Reinstall your NIC drivers (the latest files that you downloaded). If it asks you to reboot, then do it.
  7. Turn your DSL router back on. Wait for all of the lights to light up, then try to surf the internet
  8. Keep an eye on the internet and see if that resolved your problem. If it didn't fix the problem, then go to the next step. If it fixed it, then skip the next step and GO TO step 10.
  9. The next time the internet comes back online, open a command prompt (start > run > cmd) and type

    Code: Select all

    ping www.google.com -t > C:\pingtest.txt
Let it run unti your internet goes out again, then use Ctrl+C to stop it. Then post the contents of pingtest.txt (located in your c: drive) in this thread.
  10. If it appears to be working, then can go ahead and plug in all of the other devices in the house (even if they don't have a filter) and see if that affects it. If it was working before and it stops working when you add the devices then its a frequency/noise issue and you'll have to get DSL filters for those devices. If you plug them in and it still works then your problem has probably been solved.
Also, other things to watch for during these tests:
  • If your CPU is spiking while the internet goes out
  • If there are any changes with the lights on the DSL modem when the internet goes out
  • If the outage occurs when someone uses a telephone or fax machine
I used business DSL for many years and I know *a lot* about it. And sometimes it can be a b*tch to track down what exactly is wrong. I'm guessing by the fact that you have such a small download speed that you live far away from a central office (the people who send you the DSL signal) which means the chances of you getting a weak signal from them is high.

Don't listen to what your ISP tells you. Half the time their techs are morons, and the other half they're just lying to you so you don't cancel. If your service isn't working and your computer appears to be fine, then its probably the internet.

Do all of that and report back. I'll be gone most of today, so I won't be able to reply until later in the day. I hope this helps.
