So I did a clean install

Post by Toad »

Yup, I completed my clean install of windows XP. Yay everything is empty! Just got to reinstall things... but I can't set up my internet!!! And seeing as how I am computer stupid, I'm probably doing something wrong. I tried using those Network Wizard things... but none of them work. The last time I got my internet working, I popped in a CD...
Linksys
Wireless-G Broadband Router... I put it in, and then it does its autorun. A blue outline pops up, and then just dissappears. I try and go to My Computer and open it there, and go to run and look for it there, rebooting and trying again... It just won't load up! It's like its trying to, but it just stops and exits... any comments?

If you're using a wireless card (which it seems is the case), then you need to pop in the CD for your NIC (Network Interface Card), not the router itself.
If you don't have a CD for the NIC, then google for the drivers.

If you're using a hard-line interface (and the card is integrated), then search for the motherboard model on google, but add "drivers" as a second word (the motherboard model, which is marked on the motherboard itself [usually the biggest text on the mobo] being the first). 8-)
If it's not an integrated NIC (most likely PCI in this case, meaning lower in the back than the bunch of interfaces), then search for the mfr + model marked on the chip.

You must do the last part[s] on another computer, though. I suggest having a flash drive on hand for this exact kinda occasion (to move the driver installer from 1 computer to another).

Anyway... hopefully this has helped a bit, if not I'm sure the following people can be of some help in interpreting my post. :)

Hmmm.... I think I went somewhere wrong in my clean install. I apparantly have two operating systems on my one computer. So on the old one, I have everything that I used to. So I tried to see if I could find anything to help me wtih the new one... I went to Network Connections, and there I had one for Hamachi, one for LAN (which isn't used (network cable unlpugged)) and the Wireless-G PCI one. So... I deleted that connection. I rebooted and went to my new OS, and nope, nothing happened. So I went to the old OS and when it booted, it said something like, detected network driver: Wireless-G PCI. And from there I am able to conncect back to my house. So.... Why is it on my old OS it detects my adapter, but on the new one it doesn't? I was thinking because my Linksys CD will not load which is... bs... Can anyone shed some light?

Depends on where your boot loader is located. Tbh I would've just knocked everything else out & just formatted the entire thing. :?

I spent about 15 minutes with Toad last night, and another 30 this morning. He's going to reload and I told him pretty much everything he needs to know. Hopefully his XP key is good for another installation and he gets back online OK.

All right :D i think everything is ship shape!!! i'll prolly install renegade tomorrow, along with things like irc, ts and xfire... however :(
Before I did all of this, I would download things and get like 60 to 120 kb/sec or w/e it is... now i get like 15 to 30 kb/sec. How do I make this higher? :( i would think it would be quicker :D
