Recent Spam Issues

Post by fl00d3d »

I know the issue has already been brought up once, but I will bring it up again [formally] in the form of a news topic:

There has been some increased spam on the website recently. 90% of which goes completely unnoticed by the average user - because the spam posts are made by guests users on a moderation queue (thus the posts aren't shown until a moderator approves them). However there are still some posts that are getting through because of successful registration attempts by spammers (despite Captcha), and the overall volume of spam (registered and guest combined) is increasing (despite my bans).

So, I wanted it to be made known that until this moment I've simply temp banned offending IPs and deleted any accounts or posts related to spam. Apparently that isn't proactive enough, so I have created a spreadsheet in the TGN staff share (Dropbox) which lists specific data related to each individual spam. It is my hope that we can use this data to create more efficient bans.

If you do see spam, simply REPORT IT. There is no need to comment after it or private message anyone. By clicking on the report button it will automatically notify administrators/moderators and we'll fix the issue.

Thanks!

*cough* dog02 *cough* This means posting in the shoutbox "can someone please remove the spam?". That post IS spam. ;)

Anyway, just a quick update: I've deleted all registered users who didn't have any posts. And I've tightened some of the registration and posting requirements. I think I'm doing an amazing job at staying on top of this, so please go about your business as usual if something has already been reported.
