Forum/Template Update

Post by fl00d3d »

All:

As promised, I am continuing to work on the website (and its template/style).

Over the last hour or so I have cleaned up the database and admin configurations and forced everyone to use the default template. For now, the default is "ProSilver".

I'm now going to upload a fresh (and latest) copy of the Xtreme template which is the template our website is based on. It will NOT have all of the functionality that our old site had right away. Things such as shoutbox, donations, news feed, etc. that were on the front of the site will no longer be there. That is because the template, by default is a forum skin and not a CMS. Once I have this in place and have verified that the template and phpBB core are completely up to date and fully functional - I will begin working on custom modifications.

So... during the next few hours (and potentially days), you may notice a lot of changes in the appearance of the website. You may also notice quite a few modifications or features that don't work. No need to report them. Once I feel I have go the website to a "mostly functional" state I will make a News post announcing this and at that time you can report any remaining bugs.

Thank you for your patience.

-Sean

Alright, I've made those changes.

Right now we have 3 different templates to chose from in the UCP:
  1. ProSilver (default) = The default template that everyone thinks is ugly. This is what you're set to right now unless you've changed it already. It's a light colored theme with avatars on the right hand side. This template is 100% up to date and 100% bug-free. It is highly recommended that you stick with it at this point.
  2. X-treme = This is a fresh copy of the latest X-treme template. It's the same STYLE and looks a lot like the old website, but this template is actually a fresh copy and is what I'm working on right now. If you can't stand the default template and want to use a theme that looks more like the old site then you can switch to this. But don't complain about the bugs. It's probably going to be buggy for awhile since this is the template I'm working on (and what will be the future default template).
  3. Old CMS = Our old website. All of the old files and template data is there, but it's barely functional. There really is no good reason to use this template anymore now that I've uploaded a fresh copy of the X-treme template. If you want to see how the old site looked you can take a peak, but 90% of the code is bad and 90% of the database functions for it have been completely and permanently removed. Items like the Shoutbox are going to be restarted from scratch - which I don't think is a big deal. And items like donations I took a screenshot of before I removed it - so I know how much everyone has donated and will import that into the new system once its up and running.
If you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to let me know. But I'm not fixing ANY bugs in the 'Old CMS' template. And for now I'm not going to fix any bug reports for 'X-treme' either (since I know it's bugged while I'm working on it). I will take bug reports for the default template (ProSilver), though. If you happen to find one.

ALL:
If your browser doesn't automatically refresh pages (or holds on to cached pages for more than a day), you should go to www.TsuGaming.com and force a Refresh (ctrl+Refresh) and/or clear out your site cache.

This isn't a huge deal, but there is an updated html page on the front page that gives more accurate information about the site than what was there a few days ago. But you'll never see that page if your browser doesn't auto-refresh each time.

More updates to come soon.

I've made some more changes.

Now tsugaming.com/forums opens the forums (rather than redirecting you to the 'Construction Home Page' I made at tsugaming.com).
And now tsugaming.com doesn't ask you to select which version of the site you want, it just forwards you to the forums.

I've decided, for now, that the priority is having fully functional forums and being able to have a bunch of different websites share the same user database --- rather than trying to build a fancy website for TsuGaming.com.

So for now, everyone has had their template preferences changed to 'Xtreme' (the blue/dark theme). You can still switch back to ProSilver if you really want to. As I work on this site, there might be bugs that pop up. So if you find anything go ahead and report them here.

Huh... looks like the template changed again without any news post... the nice big Active Topics button has been relegated to a tiny little text link and some silly clock thing has been added which pointlessly duplicates the date and time already shown in the bottom corner of my screen... preferred the nice big active topics button in place of the useless clock tbh.

Not sure about the active topics button because I never use it, but I'm pretty sure that the clock always used to be there. It was certainly there way back in the old days anyway. Personally I prefer this template.

Yes, it used to be on the old website, but it wasn't there yesterday when using the original, unmodified xtreme theme. Looks like Sean imported the top banner from the old website in place of the default xtreme one, which brought back the redundant clock and turned the Active Topics link back into the small tiny bit of text.

The reason I notice is because that's how I browse the forum... I hit Active Topics and then just click into the topics with new posts... much quicker than farting around clicking into each subforum to see how many new topics are in each one, since it provides a nice handy list of *all* topics with new posts in once place. I never browse the forum any other way.

I documented all of this in the Web Team forums (which you still have complementary access to, even though you're technically not helping with the website anymore). I didn't make a news announcement because it wasn't a critical bug/fix and everything is functional.

But, yeah, I basically took the header from the old cms version and put it into this version as a quick fix. Because I got sick of looking at the "Xtreme Theme" or whatever banner. I missed our Tsunami Gaming banner. :P

I've got all the old posts read so I get a nice big yellow tick next to the subforum whenver there's a new post. No fiddling involved.

Any half decent website should work on resolutions of 1024x768 and up... used to be 800x600 and up but these days its so rare to find 800x600 that it's not worth supporting.

That screenshot was taken on a resolution of 1280x768, which means it will look even worse on 1024x768 which, according to stats, accounts for 21% of internet users. Combine that with the % of users on 1280x### and the website looks silly for over 45% of internet users.

Hence, it should be fixed.

No edit available so double post...

If 3 different subforums have new posts then you have to keep returning to the index to get to the next subforum. With Active Topics you just hit back once and move on to the next topic in the list. Much easier.
