Adobe dropping support for Flash Player

Post by danpaul88 »

It looks like even Adobe are beginning to ditch Flash in favour of HTML5...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15648899
The report said the firm would now focus on the alternative HTML5 technology and its own AIR product.

I'm all for it. I wonder how long it will take for HTML5 to surpass Flash, though.

Note that the article was written about development for mobile devices. I'm not sure this is a generalized thing - but even if it is, I can't imagine desktop flash will disappear any time soon. Way too much time and money put into it to just abandon it for "a new and improved technology". This will take time to work its way through the market.

AIR is, as far as I know, a desktop product, which would seem to suggest this might have ramifications for the desktop market too. Whilst I doubt flash is going to vanish overnight it makes little sense for Adobe to develop two completely separate platforms for desktop and mobile when the mobile platform (HTML5) works equally well on the desktop.
