Forum bumping itself?

Post by medici »

I've noticed this happening in several threads around the forums, old topics seem to 'bump' themselves, with the last post's date changing and appearing as a new post. It seems to happen as one or more months pass exactly, for example, a post is made on 13th January 2008, and it appears 'bumped' with it's new date showing as 13th February 2008.

A prime example can be found here: http://www.tsugaming.com/forums/viewtop ... &start=100

I actually made this post as a reply to Ohmypants who was referring to his post's date changing, and then the same thing happened to my post. I made it on 13th January 2008, and it's date now shows as 13th February 2008.

I hope this is clear enough.

I don't think the actual date is changing. I'd have to see a screenshot before and after to believe it. It just doesn't make sense.

The forums do, however, have a bump feature, where you can bump a topic without posting. But you have to wait awhile to be able to do it. Perhaps a guest is doing it. I'll disable bumping for guests and see if that helps.

Actually from what I have seen of the phpbb3 codebase, it DOES change the post dates in a topic if someone bumps an old topic. That's how the bump feature works, it adjusts the post dates so that it gets shown at the top of the forum list.

Would it be possible for someone to post and then delete it? Making it appear to be bumped?

They don't need to, they just press 'Bump Topic' above the subject of the first post in an old topic and it adjusts the topics dates so that it appears at the top of the forum.

Anyone can press the bump topic button, it does not have to be their topic.

f*ck that, then. I'll just disable that feature and if you want to bump a topic you can make a post that says "bump".

Yeah, it seems a bit of a pointless feature tbh...

It's been disabled, to the best of my knowledge. I know guests definitely can't bump topics.
