MAJOR WEB CHANGES <---

Post by fl00d3d »

I have just finished speaking with Danpaul about some major changes to our website and the way things are done.

We have both agreed on some major changes that will be started NOW (already in progress, actually). It should be very obvious to you guys in about 30 minutes or so.

  • This custom template is going bye bye - we'll figure out what template we want to use in a bit. For now, it will be the default one that comes with phpBB. Since the forums aren't too active right now anyway, it shouldn't be a big deal.
  • All custom modifications are being wiped. We are going to either redo the custom mods we want to keep, or find a community-released (phpBB community) mod that has similar or greater functionality; therefore being more compatible with the core phpBB system.
  • The file structure of our web root will be changing as well. So there will probably be a LOT of broken links (to files and pictures) for a short while. As we find them, we'll fix them. But rather than track down where everything is and then move it/recode it ... it's easier to just break it and fix all errors.
  • Heavy modification to the authentication system will be taking place "soon" so that we can finally have the multi-site (shared users) functionality we have been talking about for what seems like FOREVER. We need to rip through some code and decide how we want things done before this step will actually be executed.

Throughout this process we encourage you to check this topic VERY REGULARLY for updates. Because we may be asking for your opinion on things. Or have other important updates you should know about.

If you guys suggest Templates, we will consider them.

But I'm not going to start a topic or poll on it or anything. Basically Danpaul and I are doing whatever we want to do (focused on functionality rather than how pretty it looks). But if you provide some suggestions we'll give them special consideration. You only have about 24 hours to do it though.

(Working on fixing avatar images/broken links atm)

Here are three styles that I think look alright, and I know conform to our standards:
Absolution: http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/?style_id=875
Acid Tech: http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/?style_id=30
CA Gen2: http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo/3.0/?style_id=385

I have created a topic to discuss website templates here;
http://www.tsugaming.net/forums/viewtop ... f=1&t=7005

PS: I also updated the under construction page on www.tsugaming.com/forums/ to redirect instantly instead of hanging around for 5 seconds first ^^

The template has been changed and it's going to stay "like this" for a short while. The next phase of changes is focused on adding the "multi site functionality" we've been talking about for awhile.

We have been looking at the various options (to include vbulletin, Witte) but none of the solutions that are out there have the level of functionality I require. We'll be doing more than "shared users" so we have no choice but to develop our own code. Danpaul will be writing this new code-base from scratch and by my strict standards (God bless you, Danpaul lol). In the end, everyone will be extremely pleased. This functionality will extend far beyond simple web logins as well ... and will enhance integration with 3rd party software such as IRC and Teamspeak.

For now, I ask that you be patient with our cosmetic and functional changes. We're working to restore functionality (as well as add MORE functionality back to the site such as TsuPoints!). Once we've made the site more powerful, we'll go back and touch up this new template to make it look all pretty. :P
